The extension of the Republican Forum initiated by Julius Caesar was followed by Augustus, Nerva and Trajan. The worked created an extraordinary urban-architectural complex, a testimony to the history, art, engineering and politics of ancient Rome, the so-called Imperial Fora. With the end of the empire, they fell into disrepair, initially becoming pastureland then a marble quarry for the Curia’s Palaces – Raphael and Michelangelo protested but to no avail. Finally, they were revived in the 19th century following fruitful excavation campaigns.
